1Modbus Protocol Basics

Overview of Modbus and its role in industrial automation
Modbus RTU over RS-485 and Modbus TCP over Ethernet
Data model: coils, discrete inputs, holding registers, and input registers
Unit ID addressing from 1 to 247
Function codes FC1, FC3, FC5, and FC6

2Simulator and Client Setup

Install and configure Open ModSim to emulate a Modbus device
Set up Unit ID, IP address, TCP port, or RTU COM port
Configure registers and coils for simulation
Connect to a physical Modbus RTU device such as a PLC or sensor
Install ModScan32 or the open-source Open ModScan client

3Hands-On Data Manipulation

Read and write coils and registers with ModScan32 or Open ModScan
Toggle a coil with FC5 and write a register value with FC6
Work with Modbus TCP and RTU communication flows
Troubleshoot timeouts, incorrect Unit IDs, and invalid addresses
